Visit of Master Shohaku Okumura to Colombia

Between de 12th and the 21st of March we had the great happiness of sharing with Master Shohaku Okumura Roshi and to receive his teachings. We were able to learn not only from his words but from his presence and his acting; from the possibility of practicing intimately with a live teacher. Okumura Roshi's visit has given a new impulse to our mission and to think about the direction we give to our practice and the way we manifest it in our daily life.

Nine of the members of the Sangha received the Buddhist precepts and the initiation as Bodhisattvas in Soto Zen. Inside the Mahayana tradition to which Zen belongs, the figure of Bodhisattva represents the ideal practice in which we place in front the wellbeing of others to the personal realization. Bodhisattvas renounce resign to the personal liberation to remain in the world of Samsara (existence chained to suffering), in order to help others.

The Master gave some lectures about precepts. He insisted in the relevance of understanding that precepts are the direction we should give to our life and to avoid to use them to judge others.

We had also the joy to practice with Dharma brothers and sisters from Venezuela and Medellín during the retreat at Santandersito, Cundinamarca.

The three minds are the attitude of a Bodhisattva towards life as taught by Dogen Zenji (1200 - 1253) and explained by Okumura Roshi during his lectures to our group. They are the materialization of our vow to contribute with concrete tools to the building of a peaceful and harmonious life. Magnanimous mind is the mind that includes everything without judging, parental mind is the mind that nourishes others as own children and joyous mind is the mind that enjoys of a life devoted to soothe suffering, they manifest our practice. We believe that kindness, generosity, honesty, joy and tolerance are powerful tools with which we count on to transform our own life and other's.
